How Florida red-light camera tickets work
Stage What it is Cost Driving record and insurance Notice of violation A civil penalty mailed to the vehicle's registered owner — treated like a parking ticket $158 No points, nothing on your driving record, and it cannot be used to set your insurance rates Uniform traffic citation A formal traffic ticket handled through the county court, issued if the notice goes unresolved for 60 days $262, plus court costs that can push the total higher Still no points under Florida law, but ignoring it can lead to a suspended license
What it means for your driving record and insurance
Nothing goes on your driving record The violation is a civil penalty against the vehicle's owner, not a moving violation against you as a driver. No points are added Florida law specifically excludes camera-detected red-light violations from the state's point system. Your insurance is protected Florida law bars insurers from using a camera violation to set your rates.
📷 A camera ticket is not an officer ticket.
If a police officer pulls you over and hands you a red-light ticket, that is a moving violation that goes on your driving record with points. The protections described on this page apply only to camera-issued tickets.
Your options during the notice-of-violation stage
Pay the $158 penalty This closes the matter. Nothing appears on your driving record, and your insurance is unaffected. Submit an affidavit If someone else was driving, the vehicle was stolen, you were yielding to an emergency vehicle or driving in a funeral procession, or an officer directed you through the light, you can file a sworn affidavit to have the violation dismissed or reassigned to the actual driver. Rental and leasing companies use this same process to name the renter or lessee as the driver, so a ticket in a rental car typically finds its way to you. Filing a false affidavit is a crime in Florida. Request a hearing You can contest the violation before a local hearing officer. If the violation is upheld, you pay the $158 penalty plus up to $250 in local administrative costs. You can also cancel a scheduled hearing by paying the penalty plus a $50 fee before it starts.
↪️ Careful right turns are exempt.
Florida law does not allow a camera ticket for a right turn on red made in a careful and prudent manner at an intersection where right turns are permitted.
What happens if the notice becomes a uniform traffic citation
The cost goes up The penalty increases to $262, and court costs and fees can push the total higher. It moves to the county court You can pay the citation or contest it in court like a regular traffic ticket. This is also the stage where an attorney can step in and fight the citation for you. You have 30 days to claim an exemption If one of the affidavit exemptions applies — for example, you were not the driver — you must submit the affidavit within 30 days after the citation is issued. Ignoring it has real consequences Failing to respond to the citation can lead to a suspended license, added fees, and collections.
⚠️ Do not ignore the citation.
The most expensive way to handle a $158 camera ticket is to pretend it does not exist. A suspended license costs far more in time, money, and stress than the original notice.
